I am Nawrass Almudhafar, an assistant lecturer in the department of English – College of Education/ Humanities- Basra- Iraq. I have an MA in applied linguistics, and I am specialized in pragmatic studies.
I am preparing a research entitled "Investigating Cross-Linguistic Differences in Refusal Speech Act among Native English Students and Iraqi Students Speaking English". The study aims at obtaining answers to the following questions:
1. What strategies and preferred order of strategies do British students (native English speakers of English) and Iraqi students of English language use when they refuse offers, requests, suggestions, and invitations?
2. What are the gender differences among male and female speakers?
3. How is the use of refusal strategies affected by the interlocutor status?
I have had problems finding British students to do the questionnaire. If you are ready to help me I will be very grateful and I will send all the details related to the study and the questionnaire.
