Focus: The course addresses the main controversies about the evolution of the English sound system in modern scholarship, paying special attention to the Great Vowel Shift.

Special Qualifications:The course is open to students enrolled in a doctoral program, but the number of places is limited. We reserve the right to reject applicants.

FormatThe format is five full days comprising a series of two-hour sessions. All sessions will approach the topic using a mixture of text-based and theory-focused approaches. The instructors will attend all sessions, although one will take responsibility for leading each session.
AssessmentTwo essays of c. 3,000 words will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. They will be individually supervised and will be due some three weeks after the course.
PreparationParticipants will be sent, a month before the event, a set of readings, unpublished research papers and specific questions to be prepared beforehand.
