Description:
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the
Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is
advertising a full-time job as research
assistant in English Linguistics. It is a
two-year contract which is renewable twice
(i.e. up to six years).
The project focus will be on morphology, syntax
, semantics, and pragmatics of English. The
research assistant may propose either a
synchronic or diachronic analysis. The proposed
research will have a theoretical and empirical
content.
Requirements:
- an M.A. degree in English or in Linguistics
or some other equivalent degree;
- knowledge of French is a plus, but high-level
English proficiency and a keen interest in
linguistics will be of paramount
importance.
Duties/Responsibilities
We are looking for applicants eager to:
- develop a research project in English
linguistics with a view to completing a
doctoral dissertation, and
- take care of exercise sessions in the three
years of the B.A. programme and the first year
of the Master’s degree (see the description
below).
Overview of English courses:
The English linguistics classes in the
Bachelor's degree are devoted to a
near-complete overview of English grammar with
a view to making students acquire all the
technical terms and concepts that should enable
them to teach English grammar at high level
and/or to specialise in linguistics.
BA1:
Basic principles of grammatical and linguistic
analysis: lexical categories vs. functions
Basic structures and constructions of
English:
- clauses;
- noun/verb/adjective/adverb/preposition
phrases.
BA2:
The grammar of the main and subordinate
clauses:
- finite and non-finite clauses;
- clause-types;
- polarity;
- basic illocutionary acts;
- comparison and coordination.

Relations between grammar and discourse, with
special focus on the ways in which
speakers/writers select certain grammatical
structures/constructions to shape the
information they mean to convey:
"Information-packaging."

Birner, B.J., and Ward, G. 2009. 'Information
Structure and Syntactic Structure.' Language

MA1:
The pragmatics of English: how speaker's
meaning goes beyond (conventional, linguistic)
sentence meaning.The course covers utterance
interpretation, indexicals, presupposition,
conversational implicatures, speech-act theory,
reported speech and thought.
