Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of
Humanities is seeking to appoint a Professor
(f/m) of Sociolinguistics (40 hours per week;
fixed-term employment for 6 years (tenure
track) according to the Austrian Law on
Salaried Employment (AngG); Expected starting
date February 1st 2015)
The incumbent will represent the field of
sociolinguistics as the interface between
language/grammar and society/culture. This
implies a critical evaluation of the social
conditions under which languages develop and
are used, depending on diverse cultural
backgrounds, and familiarity with issues of
language documentation and endangered languages
as well as ethnolinguistic approaches to
language description. The successful candidate
will have worked empirically on at least one
non-Indo-European language and will possess a
strong research background in at least one core
area of descriptive grammar. She/he will also
have an excellent knowledge of methodological
issues of language description. Furthermore,
the successful candidate will become involved
in other research projects at the Department of
Linguistics and establish and maintain
cooperative working relationships with the
philological departments of the Faculty of
Humanities. She/he is expected to be involved
in the international linguistic community and
have experience in teaching linguistics.
In addition, we expect gender mainstreaming
competence.
