Description:
Kansai University, a large private university
in Osaka, Japan, seeks to appoint one person in
the field of English literature or linguistics
for a permanent (tenured) position starting in
April, 2015. In accordance to the Equal
Employment Opportunity laws of Japan,
applicants will not be discriminated against on
the basis of gender.
Classes (scheduled) to be taught during the
2015 academic year:
Undergraduate courses in the major--English
Literature/Linguistics Lecture 1 & 2,
undergraduate seminars, etc. In addition, the
successful applicant may be asked to teach
introductory first-year courses in the faculty,
such as "Chinonabigeta"(an introduction to
study skills) and other general education
courses, as well as a master's course on
comparative literature or linguistics.
Requirements:
1. Be able to teach a class in comparative
English and Japanese literature or linguistics
primarily in English.
2. Speak English as a first language, or have
the equivalent of native speaker English
proficiency. Native English speakers should
also have a high enough level of Japanese
language proficiency to conduct classes and
carry out administrative duties in
Japanese.
3. Have a doctorate or equivalent research.

1. Resume (in specified format): 1 copy
2. List of research publications and
presentations (in specified format): 1 copy
3. For applicants holding a doctorate, proof of
this qualification or a copy of the diploma: 1
copy
4. 1 copy each of 3 main publications (books or
articles), offprints accepted.
5. An explanation of how you would develop a
comparative Japanese- English literature or
linguistics course (One A4-size page, about 600
words in length)
It is acceptable to submit both the resume and
the list of research publications and
presentations using a purchased form or a form
developed by the applicant rather than the
Kansai University form.
Additional points:
1. Send application materials by simple
registered mail (kan'i kakitome) and on the
front of the envelope, write 'Application for
English Literature and Linguistics Faculty
Position' in red ink.
2. Applications must be postmarked no later
than July 31st, 2014.
3. Additional materials may be requested during
the vetting process.
4. In principle, application documents will not
be returned. Applicants who wish to have books
or other publications returned should clearly
state this in their cover letter and provide a
self-addressed stamped envelope or COD
parcel-post (takkyubin) envelope with the form
filled in along with their application.
Selection Process:
1. The first screening will be based on the
documents submitted, and the second screening
will involve both an interview and a short
model lesson.
2. The interview and model lesson are scheduled
for Saturday, October 4th, 2014.
Notification of Decision:
Applicants will received notification of the
results of the first screening (based on the
documents submitted) by mail around mid
September, 2014.
