Linguists with expertise in Arabic and Persian
are invited to contribute chapters for a
peer-reviewed book on the treaties, letters,
and covenants of the Prophet Muhammad,
tentatively titled:
Critical Studies on the Covenants of the
Prophet.
Chapters may address: comparative linguistic
analysis of the two variants of the Covenant of
the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the
World, namely, the 1538 version discovered by
Father Scaliger, and the version published by
Gabriel Sionita in 1630; comparative studies of
the translations of the covenants into Latin,
French, English, and German; linguistic
analysis of the covenants; stylistic
analysis of the covenants; discourse analysis
of the covenants; linguistic evidence
suggesting the scribes who copied these
documents were not native Arabic-speakers;
evidence of textual tampering; comparative
language use between the covenants and the
hadith literature; scribal errors and spelling
mistakes in the covenants; dating of the
covenants on the basis both language use and
script; the covenants of the Prophet in light
of Ottoman achtiname, ahidname or ahdname
tradition; semantic
shifts in early Islamic terminology; the
understanding of the term ahl al-kitab; the use
of the first person singular in the covenants;
the phrasing, nature, and intent of the
promises; the phrasing of punishments to those
who breached the covenants; the phrasing that
indicated goals and hopes for future events;
Christian terminology in the covenants;
integration of hadith and Qur'an into the
covenants; and other approved topics.
