Description:

We wish to provide notice of the availability of University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships, which are tenable in the University of Canterbury Department of Linguistics in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Canterbury houses several large corpora, including the ONZE corpus (Origins of New Zealand English). It has particular strengths in Sociolinguistics and Sound Structure. Linguistics at Canterbury forms an integral part of the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB), and as such, presents substantial opportunities for multi-disciplinary research (http://www.nzilbb.canterbury.ac.nz). NZILBB also houses a variety of state-of-the-art equipment, including Ultrasound, Electromagnetic Articulography, EEG, and 3D motion tracking.

UC Scholarships provide NZ$21,000/year for three years, and cover the university fees. There are no restrictions on regional origin of the applicants. The next application deadline is October 15. Top ranked international applicants for UC scholarships are awarded UC International Doctoral Scholarships, which also provide an airfare at the start and end of the tenure. A further application round will follow with a deadline of May 15, 2015.

Requirements:
The PhD at the University of Canterbury is by thesis only, and interested candidates should, in the first instance, identify a potential supervisor.
Possible thesis supervisors are:

Jen Hay - Sociophonetics, Laboratory Phonology, Morphology, Lexical Representation, NZ English

Co-supervisors may also be drawn from faculty from across the university, and from adjunct fellows associated with NZILBB (including Professor Janet Pierrehumbert (faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu/~jbp/). Many relevant potential co-supervisors can be found in the list of faculty associated with NZILBB: http://www.nzilbb.canterbury.ac.nz/
If you wish to discuss an idea for a research project with a potential supervisor, please contact Postgraduate Co-ordinator Jen Hay in the first instance and she'll forward to the appropriate person (jen.haycanterbury.ac.nz).

Note that in addition to the general competition, one of the UC scholarships in 2015 is strategically ring-fenced for an applicant associated with NZILBB (of which all Linguistics faculty are members).
We also draw potential students' attention to the New Zealand Brain Research Institute Scholarship. This scholarship is tenable by a student who has a particular interest in working toward a PhD in Linguistics at Canterbury, on a project conducted in collaboration with the NZ Brain Research Institute.
