Meeting Description:
The conference Les signes, leur combinaison et les propriétés fondamentales du langage, which constitutes a tribute to Denis Bouchard, will be held at the Université du Québec à Montréal on November 13 and 14, 2014. The objective of the conference is twofold. Firstly, it will provide the occasion to underline the contribution of a remarkable scholar, the linguist Denis Bouchard, to the field of cognitive sciences in general and to linguistics in particular. Secondly, it will act as a forum for the evaluation of the present and future impact of his contribution in three areas of research in which his works have had considerable influence, that is linguistic theory, the description of languages (English, French, Norwegian, langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) and creoles) and the origin of language.
In addition to the presentations, the conference includes two plenary talks and a discussion. The opening plenary talk will be addressed by Frederick J. Newmeyer (University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Washington), the closing plenary talk will be addressed by Denis Bouchard himself, and the discussion will be lead by Daniel Valois (Université de Montréal). All presentations will be interpreted in langue des signes québécoise.
