As the language used at the heart of culture and administration, the Damascus dialect has a very high prestige and is not only understood in other regions of Syria, but is also actively spoken by many people living in the country. This introductory textbook on Syrian Arabic is based on the form of the language which is spoken by the young and educated generation in Damascus and is that which is also often heard in the media.

In addition to the language, because the authors wish to provide students with an insight into the country's rich, everyday culture, as well as into its important conventions and customs, this user-oriented and practice-based book not only takes into account words and forms used in the original dialect, but also covers the many influences of high Arabic. This allows for the discussion of topics for which the corresponding vocabulary is lacking in the pure form of the dialect.

All of the key grammatical structures are presented in Volume 1. The book is intended for those with a general interest in Syrian dialects, as well as for students of Arabic and Semitic Studies. No previous knowledge of Arabic or other Semitic languages is required. (Harrassowitz Verlag 2014)
