The Discourse of Police Investigation
With the purpose of evaluating, exploring, and
focusing on the linguistic aspects of police
investigation, we are creating an edited volume
that explores the intersections of linguistic
theory and police discourse. We invite
contributors who are doing research on police
discourse to participate in this volume. Papers
dealing with the analysis of either theoretical
or practical-applications based linguistics in
a wide-range of police exchanges in both
monolingual and bilingual settings are welcome.
Some possible topics include:
1. Invocations for Counsel
2. The Reading/Understanding of Miranda
Warnings
3. Witness's Statements (Oral/Written)
4. Suspect's Statements (Oral/Written) while in
Police Custody
5. Threatening Letters Obtained During Police
Investigation
6. Suicide Notes Used in a Police
Investigation
7. Police Interrogation Strategies (e.g., in
actual cases)
8. Police Interrogation Training and/or
Techniques
9. Police Interviewing vs. Police
Interrogation
10. Confessions (Oral/Written)
11. Police Reports (e.g., introduced as
evidence at a trial)
12. The Legal Framework of Police Interrogation
and/or Police Statements
13. The Interpretation of Criminal Legal
Statutes (e.g., to charge/convict a suspect of
a crime)
The language of the proposed publication is
English. Contributors should provide a detailed
abstract submission of 250-300 words and/or
paper submissions, including abstracts, that
range between 5500 and 8000 words. Submissions
should be typed in double space using MS Word.
Submissions should be sent no later than May
11, 2014 as an email attachment to:
mmason
westga.edu.
The subject line should read 'The Discourse of
Police Investigation Edited Volume'.
Each paper should contain a cover page
(included in the email attachment containing
the document) with the following information:
title of paper, name(s) of the author(s),
affiliation, contact address (postal and email)
and telephone number.
