Focus: Empirical research into interpreting, be
it at the MA level, be it at the PhD level, can
be a daunting endeavor. Finding a feasible
research question, identifying an appropriate
research method, collecting reliable data and
making sense of them are a challenge for any
student without a social-science background.
This summer school will provide participants
with the necessary skills to design and
complete an empirical research project, and
give them ample opportunity to discuss their
projects with experienced researchers.
Minimum Education Level: MA
Special Qualifications:
None required.
Description:
The course is tailored for MA students at an
advanced stage of their thesis or
doctoral students at the beginning of their
dissertation who want to engage in
empirical research into interpreting. The
following topics will be covered
during the presentations and the exercises:
- principles of good research;
- scales of measurement;
- quantitative research;
- experimental and quasi-experimental
research;
- experimental design;
- cause and effect relationships;
- observation and introspection;
- correlations; surveys;
- making sense of data;
- visualizing data.
