The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track appointment ranked at Assistant Professor in Endangered Language Sustainability (ELS), with a secondary appointment (5-year term, renewable) as Director, Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI). CILLDI is administered through the Department of Linguistics, and sponsored by the Faculties of Arts, Education and Native Studies (http://www.cilldi.ualberta.ca).

Applicants must hold a PhD, have published peer-reviewed scholarly research and demonstrate teaching relevant to endangered language documentation and ELS, especially of indigenous North American languages. The successful candidate must have extensive professional and community connections leading to research and education efforts involving ELS at national and international levels. The research could include, but is not limited to, documentation; new technologies for endangered language sustainability; production of dictionaries, grammars and corpora of endangered languages; and curriculum development/assessment tools for second language teaching in endangered language contexts. Candidates must demonstrate capacity to secure external funding for research relating to ELS. The successful candidate is expected to offer linguistics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, especially in the teaching of Aboriginal languages as second languages and applied linguistics relating to ELS. Experiencing teaching morphosyntax would be an advantage. The successful candidate is also expected to supervise graduate students in the department and contribute to university service.

For the Directorship component, the successful candidate must have experience consulting with Aboriginal communities preferably within Western Canada; developing and implementing strategic plans for ELS educational and other activities; liaising with senior academic, governmental and corporate administrators, as well as University personnel at multiple academic institutions for operations concerning delivery of ELS educational content to language educators. The successful candidate must demonstrate capacity to secure external public and private funding, as well as experience managing the operation of ELS education efforts. The successful candidate will be expected to offer courses in the CIILDI Summer School.

The successful candidate will be expected to expand upon documentation/research and community education/engagement efforts by leading the Department’s plan to establish a new CILS (Centre for Indigenous Language Sustainability), which is envisioned as an internationally recognized program to document and sustain endangered languages through funding, research, publication, other dissemination and community service as well as education efforts. The successful candidate is expected to develop new certificate programs and work toward establishing new ELS degree programs in the Department of Linguistics.
