Whereas it is common knowledge that people differ considerably in their ability to learn new languages, it is less obvious that people also differ in how easily they process their native language, in which they are fully proficient by definition. Hearing acuity, cognitive and language skills have been shown to predict language processing differences. Importantly, these findings have hardly made their way into models of language processing.
Researchers working on different language modalities (speech perception, production, and reading) are invited to discuss the following topics:
- How can individual differences research (or group differences research) inform models of spoken or written language processing?
- Do abilities that consistently predict comprehension ability also predict production ability?
- Relatedly, how can we compare results obtained with different experimental paradigms?
