Meeting Description:

Rethinking, Language, Diversity, and Education will address social, linguistic and cultural difference in educational contexts by asking participants to take up questions of globalization, difference, community, identity, democracy, ethics, politics, technology, language rights, and cultural politics through the evolving field of Language Education.

The conference, co-organized by the University of Toronto and the University of the Aegean in collaboration with the University of Crete, will take place in Rhodes, Greece, May 28-31 2015.

Guest speakers professors Jim Cummins (University of Toronto) and Michalis Damanakis (University of Crete) will be honored during the conference for their significant contributions in promoting and empowering linguistic and cultural diversity in education.

2nd Call for Papers:

We are announcing the second call for abstracts which is March 15, 2015.

Presentation Formats:

1. Papers 20 minutes, with 5 minutes for questions/responses
2. Symposium 1.5 hours with 3 contributors
3. Posters (to be displayed at designated times throughout the conference)
4. *Virtual papers

Abstracts should address directly at least one of the key strands of the conference:

1. Mapping language diversity: Cultures, countries, communities, and Institutions
2. Languages in context: Heritage languages, languages in diaspora, immigrant, minority, indigenous languages
3. Continua of language diversity: Linguistic transformations, translanguaging, biliteracy, plurilingualism
4. Language policy and planning
5. Language assessment, standards, and testing
6. Literacy, multiliteracies, multimodalities
7. Language contexts, e-contexts and hybrid contexts
8. Pedagogical orientations
9. Language, diversity and identity
10. Research methodology
11. Literacy, language diversity & technology

*A limited number of Virtual Papers in the form of podcast spaces or other multimedia productions are available for students and faculty who would like to present at the conference but cannot attend in person. A paper must be submitted after the Abstract is accepted. The mode of presentation is virtual.

Author Guidelines:

Only submissions that have not been previously published or presented at another professional meeting are eligible. After abstract is accepted, a full paper must be uploaded to the conference web site.

Abstract Submission:

Deadline: March 15, 2015

Title: The paper title should be entered with proper capitalization in title case: Make Sure That the First Letter of Each Appropriate Word Is Capitalized. Spell out all acronyms or abbreviations in parentheses.

Abstract: Submit an abstract that addresses the basic elements of a research or scholarly paper/presentation. If a Virtual Paper presentation is requestion, it must be stated clearly in the abstract. Abstracts for accepted submissions will be made publicly available. The following areas can be used as a guide when writing the abstract:

1. Objectives or purposes
2. Perspective(s) or theoretical framework
3. Methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry
4. Data sources, evidence, objects, or materials
5. Results and/or substantiated conclusions or warrants for arguments/point of view
6. Scientific or scholarly significance of the study or work
