Abstract:

The thematic focus and financial dimension of the funding of literary translation in Germany have up until now never been assessed. On the basis of empirical data collected for the first time, Slávka Rude-Porubská addresses the funding of literary translation by public and private institutions from three different perspectives. She analyzes the forms and functions of translation funding as well as support for translators from the viewpoint of the sociology of translation, book studies and cultural politics. This systematic review which includes numerous case studies is meant to stimulate further debate on the development of funding policies as well as on the academic conceptualization of funding as a social act.
