Abstract:

The Slavs and their languages in medieval Europe have been the subject of a large number of studies. In this book the Slav's historical stock of river names, settlement names, personal and tribe names is etymologically analyzed and used in the reconstruction of aspects of Slavic history for which there is hardly any other evidence available. The evidence of names is based on a new collection of linguistic material from hitherto unnoticed historical documents of the German-Slavic language contact area. As well as providing new language-historical findings, the book sheds light on the economic activities, social relationships and settlement history of the Slavs. It is indispensable to anyone interested in the history of Slavs and Slavic languages in medieval Europe.
