Responsibilities

The computational linguist will work with machine learning and linguistics specialists to process textual data for rich information useful in accurately quantifying student performance. S/he will research, develop, and implement techniques to this end as part of a software pipeline that connects raw student responses to predictive models of instructor scores. The position is located in Durham, North Carolina.

Qualifications

- Master’s or doctorate in Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Language Technology, or closely related field, with a specialization in semantics preferred
- A strong programming background and production experience with one or more compiled programming languages (C#, C++, Java) and one or more scripting environments (Python, R, Perl, Ruby, regular expressions).
- A strong statistical and machine learning background and a familiarity with a variety of machine learning libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, Theano, NLTK, Spark, Weka, Vowpal Wabbit, Shogun)
- Experience with state-of-the-art NLP techniques in one or more areas of English text analytics (e.g., information extraction, summarization, semantic parsing, sentiment analysis)
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other team members to assure on-time delivery of quality products
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience/Skills:

- Work experience is a plus, but promising new graduates are encouraged to apply
- A strong grounding in English syntax and semantics and some familiarity with the structure of at least one other language
- Familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems, “massively parallel” clustered or distributed computing, and at least one source-control product (e.g., svn, github, mercurial hg)
- Experience with the application of NLP tools in the area of education
- Publications/conference presentations in a relevant field
