Abstract:

The volume Prospective Verbs in German deals with verbs such as erwarten (to expect), befurchten (to be apprehensive), bevorstehen (to be imminent), hoffen auf (to hope for), rechnen mit (to reckon) or voraussagen (to predict). These verbs possess particular syntactical properties, which this study proposes to clarify. How, for example, is the apparent conflict between tense and adjunct in the sentence you have predicted rain tomorrow? Semantics offers a clarification for prospective verbs whereby by considering the relationship of semantics and syntax together at the same time. Such questions are treated in the conclusion of this study. (Universitätsverlag Winter 2014)
