Focus: The GAL Research School for Methods in Empirical Pragmatics (MeEP) is a summer school for postgraduate students. It deals with methods in pragmatics research and strategies for handling empirical data. The aim is to enhance your knowledge and abilities in all steps involved in the methodological process: Selecting the method most suitable to a specific research question, collecting data, and coding and analysing them in a systematic way. For this purpose, the following renowned speakers in the area of pragmatics will give you input and work with you in groups and individually: - Anne Barron focuses on empirical methods in second language pragmatics with a particular focus on the possibilities which technology offers in circumventing existing obstacles in research and teaching. - Michael Haugh's approach is interactional pragmatics, i.e. an approach to pragmatics informed by research and methods in ethnomethological conversation analysis. The focus is on the granularity of social action ascription in talk-in-interaction. - Miriam Locher will talk about interpersonal pragmatics and advice in medical contexts by focusing on computer-mediated discourse. - John M. Kirk will discuss pragmatic annotation in corpora, with particular reference to discourse features.
Minimum Education Level: MA
Special Qualifications: Master’s and PhD students with knowledge of pragmatics and empirical research
The MeEP will take place on three consecutive days and consists of input lectures, workshops and individual advising sessions given by each of the four speakers.
The MeEP’s structure, with its parallel sessions, allows you to choose those input lectures/workshops and advising sessions which are most beneficial for your own project. Moreover, the speakers will work with you for one afternoon and the following morning, which gives you plenty of time to grasp and apply the respective methods and to discuss your individual questions and issues. Please note that the number of slots for the workshops and advising sessions is limited, so make sure to apply early!
All lectures and workshops will be held in English.
