Description:

The Department of English at Fort Hays State University is pleased to announce its new TESOL concentration within the MA in English program. Successful graduates of this concentration are envisioned to be considered for employment at our partner institutions in China: Sias International University and Shenyang Normal University.

The TESOL concentration allows students to pursue coursework with a focus on teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language. Graduate students in TESOL will be required to complete 30 credit hours of course work.

This includes 18 credit hours of course work:

- ENG 826: Approaches to Graduate Studies in English
- ENG 680: Intro to Linguistic Science
- ENG 685: Modern Grammar and Usage/Structure of English
- ENG 832: Second Language Acquisition
- ENG 813: Studies in English Pedagogy: TESOL Curriculum and Methods
- ENG 674: Practicum

and 12 credit hours of electives from a broad range of disciplines (applied linguistics, rhetoric, literature, education, statistics). MA candidates in TESOL have the option of completing a thesis in place of 3-6 credit hours of elective coursework. They are also required to pass a comprehensive exam. With careful planning, the program can be completed in one year (including the summer semester).

The Department annually hires international faculty to teach our composition (English 101 and 102) courses at our partner institutions: Sias International University (Xinzheng, China) and Shenyang Normal University (Shenyang, China). Upon completion of the MA in English, graduates of our TESOL concentration are encouraged to apply for teaching positions at our partner institutions. Continued multi-year employment in China might be possible subject to satisfactory performance. In addition to post-graduation employment, the Department might be able to assist MA students with remunerative practicum opportunities — both in China and in the English Language Program on campus.

The Department also offers a limited number of highly competitive assistantships, which primarily involves duties in the Writing Center. Each assistantship carries a full tuition remission for 9 credit hours per semester (excluding fees) and a stipend of $10,000 per year. Assistantship funding is renewable for another year based on performance and availability. Tuition reimbursement is at the in-state level only, and out-of-state and international applicants should be prepared to cover the remainder of the tuition bill. Please see https://www.fhsu.edu/academic/gradschl/tuition/ for tuition and fees.

Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in English or Linguistics from a regionally accredited university or its equivalent.
- Non-native speakers of English must provide proof of their language proficiency.
