Job Title: Research Scientist - Computational Linguist

Job Rank: Researcher; Scientist

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is seeking to expand its research team. CASL invites applications for a research scientist to work in its interdisciplinary research program on Computational Linguistics. CASL seeks a scholar with knowledge and expertise in computational linguistics and computer science, with emphasis on social media. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team on research projects that enable government employees–especially intelligence analysts–to improve their performance.

CASL, established in 2003, is one of 14 university-affiliated research centers in the nation. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals, advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government professions, and improving the quality of human language technology.

Compensation for this position is competitive commensurate with experience and education, plus fantastic benefits (e.g., healthcare, excellent retirement plans, 22 days for annual leave, 3 personal days, and 14 scheduled holiday leave days per University schedule).

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computer Science, or related disciplines; a record of research achievement in the areas of Natural Language Processing and Human Language Technology; excellent written and oral communication skills; and a strong record of publication. Preference will be given to candidates with research that addresses questions of social media, particularly in the context of languages other than English. Experience with natural language processing or machine learning at scale is a plus. Experience developing within IC or DoD elements is a plus. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the appropriate security clearance.

The Center is seeking people who will play a leading role in the strategic direction of CASL and will participate in multiple research projects in their field. Candidates’ research and publications should demonstrate the ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and to work collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers.
