Description:

The Department of English at Leipzig University invites applications for a W2-Professorship (permanent position) in English historical linguistics with a focus on Old and Middle English to be filled by 1. April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The ideal candidate is an expert in their field whose research and teaching covers the full range of historical linguistics and whose empirical research on textual corpora draws on and feeds into linguistic theory. Due to the textual orientation of the position, the candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching of cultural and literary studies courses as part of the medieval studies modules of the department. We encourage applications from Historical Sociolinguists. The ideal candidate combines documented expertise in theories of language change with a research focus on textual analysis and a socio-historical and/or comparative orientation. The research interests of the candidate should lie in one of the core areas of Linguistics; Phonology, Morphology, Syntax or Semantics.

The candidate should be able to provide qualified teaching in the areas of English and general historical linguistics in the BA/MA and PhD degree programmes, as well as in the teacher training courses for the state certificate ("Staatsexamen"). S/he will also contribute to the departmental medieval studies courses as well as to cross-departmental linguistics courses. We expect the candidate to cooperate with existing and planned research proposals and to complement existing strengths at Leipzig University, especially in the research theme “Language and Culture in the Digital Age”. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in departmental-level administration, in attracting external research funding and in the successful completion of research projects, especially at an international level.
