During this workshop the focus will be on the following issues:
(i) Whether and to what extent theoretical models developed in modern studies for the use of a second language (with reference to bilingual communication and to various expressions of language contact in contemporary linguistic communities) may help interpret similar phenomena in the past and reconstruct the corresponding scenarios.
(ii) Whether and to what extent, in turn, the analysis of data attested across a long time span may contribute to the understanding of contemporary expressions and contexts of bilingualism and language contact, providing useful interpretative comparison.
