The School of English at the University of Hong Kong invites applications from well-qualified candidates for full-time or part-time MPhil or PhD degrees for enrolment in the academic year 2017/18 (candidature starting 1 September 2017).

We welcome applications from candidates with research areas aligned with those of the School. Applicants are strongly advised to contact potential supervisors well in advance of their application to enquire about the possibility of supervision and to discuss preliminarily their research proposal. Information on major research areas in the School and research areas of professoriate staff, as well as on being a postgraduate student in the School, can be found at:

Applicants may also apply to do a Joint PhD programme with King’s College London (KCL), in which part of the training and research activity are undertaken at KCL. Detailed information on this programme can be found at:

The Main Round application period is currently open, with an application deadline of 1 December 2016. (There are 2 more application periods in 2017 but with more limited places.) Applications are to be made online. Detailed information on the application process can be found on the HKU Graduate School webpage at:

Numerous scholarships are available for postgraduate research at our university:

- Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS): All full-time MPhil and PhD students who hold a first degree with second-class honours first division (or equivalent) or above are normally considered eligible to receive the PGS of HK$15,700 per month (HK$16,140 after PhD probation is confirmed).
- Hong Kong PhD Fellowships (HKPF): This is a highly competitive, prestigious award for outstanding candidates to pursue their research degree in HK, comprising a monthly scholarship of HK$20,000 and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 per year. Applications for the HKPF should be submitted by the deadline of 1 December 2016, HKT 12:00, to the Research Grants Council, and the HKPF reference number then has to be included in the full RPg application to HKU.
- University Postgraduate Fellowships (UPF): For candidates with excellent academic performances, this fellowship is at a value of HK$70,000 on top of the PGS. There is no separate application for UPF; applicants who have applied for the HKPF will automatically be considered for the UPF.

In addition, all full-time MPhil and PhD students are eligible for conference and/or travel support for overseas conferences or research activities.
