Description:

The University of Southampton is pleased to offer PhD studentships in linguistics for the 2017/18 academic year through the new ESRC-funded South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). An exciting new collaboration between the Universities of Southampton, Brighton and Portsmouth, the South Coast DTP aims to deliver the latest developments in training in research methods and skills to produce highly qualified and rounded social scientists, equipped to meet contemporary economic and social challenges. Funding for both Masters plus PhD (1+3) and standalone PhD (+3) is available. The Department of Modern Languages has particular strengths in second (L2) and additional language acquisition, classroom-based L2 instruction, theoretical syntax, language attrition, variationist sociolinguistics, bilingual education, teacher development, global Englishes and more.

The South Coast DTP will be awarding 36 studentships per year across its three partner institutions. The first intake of funded students will be in the 2017/18 Academic Year. In addition to covering the cost of all programme fees, those in receipt of a South Coast DTP studentship award will also receive an annual maintenance grant of £14,482 (2017/18 RCUK rate). South Coast DTP PhD students will also have access to additional funds for carrying out fieldwork, purchasing essential equipment and attending relevant conferences. Further details and instructions for applying for studentships can be found at the South Coast DTP website: http://southcoastdtp.ac.uk/

The University of Southampton also has a number of other funding opportunities for UK, EU and international applicants studying linguistics and other disciplines. Please see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/humanities/postgraduate/money_matters.page#scholarships for details of these schemes.
