Focus: The Centre for Applied Linguistics, the University of Latvia is pleased to announce the first postgraduate spring school ‘Language for Communication: Research Perspective’, which is organized within the 3rd Symposium on Language for International Communication. The Spring School is a three-day event organised by the University of Latvia, Riga in cooperation with the Belarusian State University and the Field Committee of Linguistics of Discourse, International Committee of Slavists.
Minimum Education Level: BA

Target audience: Doctoral, Master’s students and researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Language of instruction: English

Scope of the school: The goal of the spring school is to offer training in conducting research projects in humanities linguistics. The school offers a comprehensive theoretical overview of major research methods as well as their practical application depending on the nature of the research questions and fostering interdisciplinarity.

Mode: lectures, seminars, a poster session, and consultations

The tentative sessions comprise:

- Qualitative and quantitative research methods and data collection tools (e.g. case studies, ethnography, interview‘Language for Communication: Research Perspectives, focus groups, classroom research, mapping)
- Discourse analysis (e.g. descriptive, multi-modal, causal-genetic model)
- Pragmatics (e.g. data collection in pragmatic research, pragmatic transfer in interaction)
- Genre analysis
- Building researcher’s scientific capacity: enhancement of writing skills

Poster presentations:
The school will also feature a poster presentation session during which the participants should present their ongoing research.
After meeting all the requirements (attendance, completion of seminar tasks and a poster presentation) 6 ECTS will be granted.
