Almost half of the world's languages have SOV order. These languages generally locate the verbs at the end of their clauses, and they tend to be rich in morphosyntax and flexible in word ordering.

There is emerging data exploring how young children process head-final languages, which present unique challenges for theories of language acquisition, language processing, and for theories about the neural organization of linguistic features.

1st CAPHL was held at Harvard University (, which initiated communication among psycholinguists working on child language processing in head-final languages.

With this second workshop, we aim to foster further discussion and fruitful exchange of ideas among researchers who study child processing of head-final languages and structures. We also hope that this workshop leads to future collaborative projects and a special issue on Language Processing in Head-Final Child Language.

Call for Abstracts:

We invite abstracts for the 2nd Workshop on Children’s Acquisition and Processing of Head-Final Languages (CAPHL), which will be held on 21 May 2016 at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Studies are especially welcome if they have not been published elsewhere and if they have theoretical implications about the mechanisms of language acquisition and processing (both comprehension and production), or about the function of specific brain regions.

Some of the questions we wish to address in the workshop are listed below:

- How do different cues contribute to children’s real-time interpretation of the thematic structure in verb-final utterances?

- How do children process complex structures (e.g., word order variation, embedded clauses, morphosyntax, long-distance dependencies, structural ambiguities) in head-final languages?

- Are there any differences between consistently and inconsistently head-final languages in terms of strategies used during parsing?

- How do children process two (or more) languages with distinct head-directionalities?

- What does the processing pattern in head-final structures reveal about language processing, language acquisition and neural functions?
