Job Title: Temporary Appointment in Linguistics

Job Rank: Adjunct Professor

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Morphology; Sociolinguistics; Syntax

The Department of English is searching for a one-year, temporary appointment in Linguistics starting in August 2017. The candidate must be able to teach courses in general linguistics (e.g., syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics), English grammar, and second language acquisition. We are especially interested in candidates committed to supporting the success of first-generation and underrepresented students. CSU, Chico seeks faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. The position is contingent on funding.

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. in Linguistics. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year, August 2017.

Eligible candidates could have expertise in any area in linguistics but should be qualified to teach undergraduate-level courses across a variety of different areas in the field. Preferred qualifications include training and experience in teaching non-native students, curriculum development, and a strong background in second language acquisition theory. Successful candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to diversity as evidenced in their record of teaching, scholarship, and/or service.

The teaching load is four courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate-level courses within the candidate’s disciplinary expertise, as well as courses for teacher education.

Appointment will be at the rank of assistant professor; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The English Department is a diverse department with faculty working in five sub-disciplines (Literature, Creative Writing, Composition/Rhetoric, English Education, and Linguistics). Department faculty have a wide range of teaching and research interests, including cross-disciplinary work. Our students come from a variety of traditional and non-traditional academic backgrounds. The Department offers three majors (Literature, English Studies, and English Education), minors in English, Creative Writing, and Linguistics, a certificate in TESOL; and a strong M.A. in English, with advising patterns in Literature, Language and Literacy, and Creative Writing. It offers nearly 300 class sections and 10 graduate seminars a year. The department is home to an active National Writing Project site, the ESL Resource Center, the Watershed Review, and participates actively in General Education, Humanities, Honors, and Liberal Studies programs, as well as the Educational Opportunity Program and the Student Learning Center.

Closing Date: Review of applications will begin on March 24, 2017-April 28, 2017; complete applications received after that date may be considered.
