LANGUAGE, Culture and Society - PhD/Young researchers course; Course leader Kjersti Fløttum

In collaboration with linguist and literature colleagues in the languages English, French, Italian, Norwegian, Russian and Spanish, we offer the PhD course “Language, Culture and Society” under the umbrella of the Bergen Summer Research School, June 12-22, 2017.

The aim of this course is to discuss the role of language and language use in a series of societal challenges and in various cultural contexts. Through different theoretical and methodical approaches, and illustrated by a diversity of cultural and societal settings, the course will focus on the role of language in relation to politics, media, climate change, poverty, migration, business, and norms.

This course is one of six parallel courses in 2017, spanning disciplines within health, humanities, and social sciences. In addition to the courses, there will be a series of joint sessions about research tools for PhD candidates, but also plenary sessions with keynotes, debates, and an excursion.

This annual multidisciplinary research school has been running for ten years, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary approaches to tackle Global Challenges. It attracts PhD candidates and junior researchers from all over the world, working on some of the greatest challenges of our time. Each course typically receives 10-20 candidates.

We would appreciate it if you could share this invitation with colleagues and PhD candidates in your network.

Please visit our website ( to check out the course and to submit your online application. For application, see here:
