Meeting Description:

Conference on Multilingualism - COM2017

What? The Conference on Multilingualism started in 2005 at the University of Trento under the name ‘Workshop on Bilingualism’, but has since then grown into a conference with a somewhat broader scope in order to include different aspects of cognition, as well as linguistic, social and educational aspects. This year, COM will be combined with a special session on minority language loss, as well as a two-day graduate Winter School on methodological issues in multilingualism research. Graduate students (including PhD candidates) are especially invited to attend the Winter School with an exciting hands-on program on offer.

The special session and the Winter School are sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the U4 Multilingualism group respectively.

When? COM2017: Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th November 2017 - Subsequent Winter School: November 9th and 10th 2017

Where? In the centre of Groningen, the Netherlands (Remonstrantste Kerk - Coehoornsingel 14, Groningen)

Keynotes? Invited speakers for COM2017 include Prof. Robert Hartsuiker, Prof. Monika Schmid, and Prof. Guillaume Thierry, but more names will be added to this list.

This year, a group of multilingualism researchers at the Groningen Center for Language and Cognition (CLCG) at the Faculty of Arts of the University is organising the conference. All members of both the organising and scientific committee are listed below.

Organising committee: Nanna Hilton, Merel Keijzer, Hanneke Loerts, Simone Sprenger

Scientific committee: Marc Brysbaert (UGent), Nanna Hilton, Merel Keijzer, Hanneke Loerts, Simone Sprenger, Esli Struys (VUB), Evy Woumans (UGent)

Call for Papers:

From 6 to 8 November 2017, the University of Groningen will be host to the Conference on Multilingualism (COM2017) in the old city centre of Groningen. The call is now open for oral and poster presentations.

Participants wishing to present should submit a title and an abstract for their presentation before June 23rd 2017 by means of our online submission form: Abstracts should be no longer than 400 words, including references. Notifications of acceptance will be sent mid July 2017. Suitable topics for presentation are all linguistic, cognitive, social and educational aspects related to bilingualism and multilingualism, including (but not limited to) language processing, language acquisition, language loss, neurolinguistics, bi-/multilingualism and cognitive control, education in a foreign language, and bi-/multilingualism and (working) memory.

Researchers working on heritage language maintenance, language attrition or communal language loss in multilingual situations are especially invited to contribute this year as COM2017 will host a special session on these topics.

Please indicate in your submission form whether you prefer a poster or oral presentation.
