Description:

As part of the career development programme for junior researchers funded by the German federal and state governments, Saarland University is inviting applications for the following tenure-track junior professorships commencing winter semester 2018. These positions will initially be fixed-term public sector positions (‘Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit’) for a period of three or four years. The duration of the appointment may be extended up to a maximum of six years in total if this is supported by the results of the teaching appraisal and the external assessment of the appointee’s research work. If performance continues to meet the required standards and if the tenure evaluation procedure is positive, the junior professor (at the German academic salary scale W1) will be promoted to a permanent professorship (lifetime tenure) at the German academic salary scale W2.

Together with other departments in the Faculty, the Dept. of Language Science and Technology is very actively involved in the CRC 1102 ‘Information Density and Linguistic Encoding’ (http://www.sfb1102.uni-saarland.de) and contributes significantly to the Saarbrücken Cluster of Excellence ‘Multimodal Computing and Interaction’ (http://www.mmci.uni-saarland.de). We welcome applications from scientists willing to contribute to and complement our existing areas of research. Applicants should be researchers of proven merit in the field of language theory, they should have an excellent command of the relevant empirical and quantitative methods and their main research interests should be in one or more of the following areas: language typology, language evolution, language diversity, multilingual language technology and multilingual language resources. The range of languages investigated should include non-Indo-European languages, of which one should be a widely used language, such as Chinese. It is expected that candidates will have experience of working in collaborative research projects and experience in acquiring external research funding. The appointment will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law. Candidates must be university graduates with experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching who have shown a particular capacity for independent academic research, generally through the outstanding quality of their PhD or doctorate. For additional information on employment requirements, please refer to 1.4 of the Framework Regulations Governing the Approval, Recruitment and Evaluation Procedures for Junior Professorships at Saarland University (http://www.uni-saarland.de/Berufungen).

Your application should include copies of your degree certificates, a list of publications, a summary of your academic history and your teaching experience, a concept paper of no more than five pages outlining your future involvement with the SFB 1102 ‘Information Density and Linguistic Encoding’, the completed recruitment questionnaire ‘Fragebogen zur Überprüfung der Einstellungsvoraussetzungen’ (http://www.uni-saarland.de/Berufungen), your work and home addresses (including telephone number and e-mail address) and the job reference number.
