Meeting Description:

The 50th Anniversary Meeting of the British Association for Applied Linguistics will be hosted by the Centre for Language Education Research, University of Leeds, on 31 August - 2 September 2017.

Conference theme: Diversity in Applied Linguistics: Opportunities, Challenges, Questions

2017 is the 50th anniversary of the first annual meeting of BAAL. The theme of the conference, Diversity and Applied Linguistics, will enable us to engage with the notion of diversity both of and in Applied Linguistics, in a diversifying world, in this anniversary year. What opportunities are enabled? What challenges are presented? What are the key questions for the field, as we take stock and look forward?

Professor Henry Widdowson, Department of English, University of Vienna
Professor Bencie Woll, Director, Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre, University College London

S. Pit Corder Lecture:

Professor Mohamed Daoud, Professor of Applied Linguistics, Institut Supérieur des Langues de Tunis

The 50th Anniversary Meeting of the British Association for Applied Linguistics will be hosted by the Centre for Language Education Research, University of Leeds, on 31 August - 2 September 2017.

Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts are welcome in any area of Applied Linguistics and should present original research. Abstracts which address the conference theme (Diversity and Applied Linguistics) will be particularly welcome.

Deadline for Receipt of Abstracts: 31 March 2017
You will be notified of the outcome of the review process in May 2017.

Your contact details will be included in the book of abstracts unless you opt out during the submission process.

Format:

Text 300 words maximum (including references, if any). Do not use any special fonts, such as bold print or caps. Do not add tables, photos, or diagrams to your abstract. Do not indent your paragraphs, leave one space between paragraphs instead. Be sure to specify the type of presentation you wish to be considered for.

Scholarships:

BAAL offers scholarships at every annual conference which are open to students and early career researchers, with the latter defined as being within 2 years of PhD completion. In addition, BAAL also offers one Chris Brumfit student/early career scholarship which is usually targeted at delegates from outside Britain who would not otherwise have funds to do so to attend the BAAL Annual Meeting. Candidates wishing to apply should submit an abstract in the usual way, indicating clearly on their submission that they wish to be considered for a scholarship. For more information on the scholarships and the selection process please refer to the conference website.

Prizes:

Poster prize : A prize will be given to the best poster presented at the conference. The winner receives £50.

The Richard Pemberton best postgraduate paper prize: The postgraduate development and liaison coordinator together with an ordinary member of the BAAL Executive Committee will draw up a shortlist and coordinate judges for the Richard Pemberton best postgraduate paper prize. The winner receives £50.

All presenters have to be BAAL members by the time they register for the conference.
