Focus: The
main aim of SUM-UP is to bring together junior and senior researchers in the field
of historical syntax in Germanic languages.
Minimum Education Level: BA
Special Qualifications: The school will be open for international students of
Germanic languages at advanced Master and PhD level.
Description:
This
year’s summer school will start with a two-day course on the structure of Yiddish by
Neil G. Jacobs. Insights in this language that is labelled a Germanic language, but
shows influences from Semitic, Slavic and Romance languages will provide the
participants with valuable knowledge on the influence of language contact on
grammatical features and its limits.
The second part of the summer school will
be a combination of talks given by experts in the field and by advanced Master and
PhD students working on historical syntax of (a) Germanic language/s. This structure
allows feedback on the individual research for the junior researchers from both the
experts and from the fellow Masters and PhD candidates.

The number of junior researchers will be limited to
10. A higher number of participants in the language structure course is possible.
The language of the summer school will be English. If you are interested in giving a
talk, please submit an abstract (max. 500 words excluding references) and a letter
of motivation (max. 1 page).
