Description:

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Arabic to begin August 10, 2019. As a Research I institution, Virginia Tech strongly values high scholarly productivity as well as excellence in teaching. The standard teaching load is two/two courses per academic year. Responsibilities include teaching Arabic at all levels and fulfilling other duties that would contribute to the ongoing expansion of the Arabic program (such as curriculum development, outreach, and promotion of study abroad). The Arabic program currently offers a minor and is developing a major, so we are seeking a creative and dynamic teacher-scholar who is willing and able to enrich our program.

Requirements include:
- PhD by time of appointment in Arabic Language or Linguistics, Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, or other related field;
- Native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, at least one Arabic dialect, and English;
- An active research agenda;
- Evidence of successful teaching experience of Arabic as a foreign language; and
- Commitment to proficiency-based and communicative approaches to teaching language.

Criminal conviction check and occasional travel to attend professional conferences and meetings are also required. Preferred qualifications include experience in: program-building, curriculum design, the development of innovative pedagogical materials, and second language proficiency testing and assessment (such as ACTFL training/certification).

Applications are to be submitted on-line at the application link below to posting TR0180125 and must include:
- A letter of application,
- Curriculum vitae,
- A list of three references including email addresses, and
- A writing sample (upload under “other” category).

Review of applications will begin October 26.
