Meeting Description:

This is a workshop of the 53rd conference of the Italian Linguistic Society (SLI).

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) states that the acceding countries shall recognize and promote the use of sign languages (art. 21), facilitate their acquisition and promote the linguistic identity of deaf communities (art. 24).

After more than ten years, few countries in the world have officially recognized their sign language and prepared language policies. Italy and the Netherlands are the only two countries in the European Union that have not recognised their sign language yet. Three are the main objectives of the workshop: to study the paths that led to the recognition or non-recognition of national sign languages; to evaluate the explicit and implicit language policies that have as their main element the use of sign languages; to deepen the identity traits of deaf communities.

2nd Call for Papers:

The Deadline for abstract submission has been extended until March 12, 2019.
Notification of acceptance will be given by March 16, 2019.
