Focus: The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota has provided high-quality professional development for language teachers for over two decade through the CARLA Summer Institute Program. Launched in 1996, this internationally known program reflects CARLA's commitment to link research and theory with practical applications for the language classroom on a variety of topics including pragmatics, second language acquisition, culture and language learning, second language assessment and more. Each institute is highly interactive and includes discussion, hands-on activities, and plenty of networking opportunities. CARLA summer institute participants—more than 6,000 to date—have come from every state and countries all over the world. They have included foreign language/world, ESL/EFL, and immersion educators at all levels of instruction, as well as program administrators, curriculum specialists, and language teacher educators.
Minimum Education Level: BA
Special Qualifications: The summer institutes are mainly targeted at inservice and preservice foreign language and ESL/EFL teachers. Each institute has a specific audience listed. For details see:

The 24th annual CARLA Summer Institute Program includes eight weeklong intensive workshops and one three-day workshop held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, and three online courses delivered completely online over a period of three to five weeks.
