Call Deadline: 30-Apr-2019

Call for papers for a thematic issue:
Contact between Textual Hebrew/Aramaic and Diaspora Jewish Languages

Throughout history, whatever languages Jews have spoken (e.g., Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Persian, Jewish English), they have generally maintained Hebrew and Aramaic for liturgical recitation, study of biblical and rabbinic texts, and other purposes. Such language contact has led to influences in their spoken and written languages, including loanwords, calque translations, and orthographic systems. This thematic issue will explore these outcomes of language contact. Articles can focus on individual Jewish languages or communities, or they can offer comparative or theoretical analysis. If you are interested in submitting a manuscript for this issue, please send a title and short abstract (50-100 words) to Sarah Bunin Benor (sbenorhuc.edu) and Ofra Tirosh-Becker (otiroshmail.huji.ac.il) by April 30, 2019. Article manuscripts will be due December 1 and will be sent out for double-blind peer review.
