Job Summary:
Full-time Linguistic Engineering / Speech Science internship for summer 2020 for students who pursue a postgraduate degree in Linguistics or Computational Linguistics at the time of the internship. The successful applicant will have strong coding and analytical skills, as well as experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. The student will report to one of our senior staff, with oversight from a linguistic engineer manager. The intern will meet at least 2 times per week with supervisor, and daily via e-mail & ad hoc sessions. Work assignments will have duration of 2 to 4 weeks, and formal feedback sessions will be given at half way and completion points.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
- Evaluating and improving design and quality of pronunciation and morphological dictionaries for DTV
- Improving current approach for automatic generation of pronunciations of DTV English named entities in Spanish
- Analysing DTV customer ASR bug reports and fixing issues
- Analysing product usage data to identify ASR DTV bugs and areas of possible improvement of language modelling process
- Programming in Python
- Discussing and presenting ideas, progress, and results within the research team
Required skills:
- Excellent programming skills (Python)
- Significant experience using Unix/Linux and shell scripting
- Solid written and oral communication skills in English
- Background in phonetics and phonology, speech technology, or natural language processing
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Education: Currently pursuing MS or PhD in Linguistics or Computational Linguistics
Preferred skills:
- Professional development experience
- Proficiency in a Slavic language and/or Spanish is ideal but not required
- Industry or academic experience with large vocabulary speech recognition
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, statistical modelling
