Description:

About the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)

Located in one of the largest binational communities in the world, UTEP is unique among research institutions. It is an R1 Carnegie classified national research University and ranks third among all U.S. colleges and universities in awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics. UTEP enrolls more than 25,000 students. The Brookings Institution in 2017 ranked UTEP as the leading university in equal access to higher education, based on a combination of research productivity and student social mobility. With 172 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs available in eight colleges and schools, UTEP is the first national research university serving a 21st century student demographic.

The Linguistics Program within the Department of Languages & Linguistics at The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Phonology beginning in Fall 2020. The successful applicant should have an active research agenda in current topics in phonology or laboratory phonology, as well as evidence of teaching success. Since the graduate program offers a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics, acquaintance with issues in Hispanic phonology is a significant plus. This position opening is in response to a recent retirement, so we anticipate that the position will develop into a tenure track position in the near future. We stand apart from other departments offering bachelors and master's degrees because we are uniquely situated in the Borderland region of the United States, and many of our undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff are bilingual, speaking and writing in both English and Spanish. Because of this, UTEP provides a potential goldmine of possible research topics related to language learning, language contact, bilingualism, and the links between language and culture.

The Linguistics Program has active connections with other academic programs including psychology, speech pathology, and sociology/anthropology. Linguistics faculty participate in UTEP’s Consortium for Scientific Research on Bilingualism (https://research.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=75980).

Requirements:

PhD in Linguistics or Hispanic Linguistics preferred, by at least September 1, 2020. Area of Specialization in phonology. Additional expertise in some of the following areas would be ideal: Spanish and experimental phonology, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, Romance linguistics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, and language variation.

Additional Information:

In keeping with its Access and Excellence mission, UTEP is committed to an open diverse, and inclusive learning and working environment that honors the talents, respects the differences, and nurtures the growth and development of all.

UTEP is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation or gender identity in employment or the provision of services.
