The Leibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS, www.leibniz-zas.de
) invites applications for an early-career post-doctoral research position in formal semantics with a starting date of September 1, 2020. The appointment is until the December 31, 2023. The position is only at 75% of full-time, but an simultaneous application for a 25% of full-time position within the ERC funded project "LeibnizDream" is possible (The ERC funding is approved, but still subject to final availability).
The ZAS is a university-independent research institute in Berlin, Germany and a member of the Leibniz Association. The opening is in area IV "Semantics and Pragmatics". The ZAS is a leading international center for research in semantics and pragmatics, with an active program of workshops and colloquia, facilities for experimental research, and ample opportunities for collaboration. Additional facilities for experimental research are being set-up for the ERC project.
The duties of the position are primarily research oriented but include some administration. Some time can also be set aside for the acquisition of external funding. In addition, the appointee is encouraged, but not obligated to teach one class (90 min./week) per year that can be held at any university in the Berlin area. The position is remunerated according to E13 of the German TVOeD pay-scale at either 75% or 100%. Limited support for equipment, conference travel, experimental work and/or linguistic fieldwork is available.
For the 75% position, applicants must have defended their Ph.D by the time of the appointment. The applicants research accomplishments are expected to be proportional with the time after Ph.D. completion, so applicants should indicate forced interruptions of research work, e.g. for family or medical reasons. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in theoretical linguistics (specifically semantics and pragmatics) and a proven research experience and an active research agenda in theoretical semantics. Applicants are asked to formulate a research plan as part of the application. Special consideration will be given to applicants whose research integrates well with the existing strengths of the ZAS and its core research program, or complements it in an interesting way. For the additional 25% position, applicants should in addition have a background in experimental linguistic research, ideally language acquisition research and/or in crosslinguistic research. ZAS aims to strengthen the diversity of its staff and so members of groups traditionally underrepresented in German academic leadership positions are especially encouraged to apply.
Applications must be submitted via electronic mail and include the following four items (1, 2 and 3 in PDF format, ideally in one PDF file): 1) a letter of intent specifying research experience and plans for the 75% in detail, as well as the starting date and the contribution to staff diversity (if any); 2) the curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications; 3) electronic copies of up to three representative publications; and 4) the names and email addresses of at least two scholars to be contacted for letters of recommendation. Applicants wishing for secure communication with PGP can contact us for the necessary encryption key.
