The Department of Linguistics at The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a Lecturer position in Speech Sciences commencing September 1, 2020.

This is a part-time position (0.75 FTE) for a term of three years, which entails a probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. The workload for the Lecturer position includes teaching plus service.

A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) and service assignments, based on a 3-3 load in the Winter sessions and 2 courses in the Summer sessions. In cases where extraordinary additional administrative responsibilities are assigned by the Head, a 3-credit teaching reduction may be granted. For the 2020-2021 year, this position is expected to teach 18 credits (six 3-credit courses), based on a 2-3 load in the Winter session, and 1 course in a Summer session. This position is also expected to support course and curriculum (re)design activities within the department.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics and are expected to demonstrate a record of high-quality teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Experience teaching both large and small courses in a linguistics department is strongly preferred. Successful applicants must provide evidence of excellent teaching ability and a strong track record of full participation in team work and program affairs, and have the ability to engage with diverse student populations and ability to contribute, through teaching and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Training and experience in computer-assisted teaching, community-based learning, student-centered learning, task-based instruction, and curriculum development is an asset. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching, active engagement in professional development and curriculum design/development of teaching materials, as well as fully participate in department affairs and service.

The ideal candidate should be able to teach introductory or general linguistics courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in at least three of the four following areas:
- Experimental phonetics,
- Statistics and research methods for linguistics, acoustic, and articulatory phonetics,
- Clinical speech science.

A candidate who is a native/fluent speaker-linguist of a less-studied language, or who has substantial field expertise with a language of Asia would be additionally preferred.
