Call for chapters - “Current Issues in Central American Spanish”
Brandon Baird, Middlebury College
Osmer Balam, The College of Wooster
Maria del Carmen Parafita Couto, Leiden University
Despite representing one of the most diverse language contact zones in the Spanish-speaking world, Central American Spanish “has been very scarcely studied, and viewed in a very fragmented way (Quesada Pacheco, 2008:146).” More recent research in this linguistic area, however, has helped to further develop our understanding of the complexities and distinguishing aspects of Central American Spanish. The present volume, which is currently under negotiation with Brill Publishers, aims to bring together a comprehensive collection of chapters that will investigate different linguistic aspects of Central American Spanish.
We invite chapters that examine the Spanish varieties that are spoken in Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, as well as native speakers of these varieties of Spanish that no longer reside in Central America (e.g., Central American immigrants in other countries, including their children born in those countries).
Topics should focus on Central American Spanish and be in the areas of phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics/pragmatics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, language contact/bilingualism, or any related discipline. Although chapters on language contact/bilingualism may include data concerning other languages, the focus should be on Central American Spanish. We welcome analyses from different theoretical frameworks and/or approaches.
Abstracts, written in English, should be no more than 250 words and should be submitted to the first editor, Brandon Baird, by Oct 31, 2020.
Oct 31, 2020: Abstract submission deadline
Nov 15, 2020: Notification of abstract decision
Dec 1, 2020: Full proposal sent to publisher
Jun 1, 2021: Full chapter submission
