Description:
The Surrey Morphology Group in the School of Literature and Languages, University of Surrey, is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral Research Fellow for a three-year Leverhulme Trust funded project “Declining Case: Inflectional Loss in Progress”. The project investigators are Matthew Baerman and Greville Corbett (Surrey), and Alexander Krasovitsky (Oxford).
The project will investigate the loss of case marking, a historical process that has profoundly transformed many of the languages of Europe. The focus will be on the area between East Serbia and West Bulgaria, where the process is still ongoing. This will enable us to explore aspects of language change that cannot be uncovered in the written record. The position advertised involves conducting fieldwork in Serbia, processing and annotating the resulting data, and presenting the results of this work at conferences and in publications, together with the project team.
The successful candidate should have experience in language description, and the elicitation and analysis of spoken language data, and be able to conduct fieldwork in Serbia, which will require a command of the spoken language. Candidates must have the ability to work independently while functioning as part of a research team. The start date for the position is 01 March 2021.
Information about the Surrey Morphology Group and their current research projects is available at
www.smg.surrey.ac.uk.
Applications should be submitted using the online form at the application website. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Matthew Baerman (m.baerman

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,866) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,817).
