Abstract:
This book is about the relationships between vocal tract shape and formants. It is intended to inform and build intuition for phoneticians regarding these relationships. One result is that axially short constrictions can only raise formant frequencies slightly, and are more likely to lower them. More global changes to vocal tract shape from its neutral shape are required to raise formant frequencies substantially. Also, constriction length is an important factor for formants. We introduce the concept of spatial phase to help in understanding how formants change with changes in vocal tract shape. Finally we derive area function vowel spaces for eight monophthong vowels of American English. This is a step toward an articulatory phonetics for vowels. This book is “foundational”—Louis Goldstein, USC.
