Subject area description:

This subject area has been awarded the power to grant degrees at second- and third-cycle level, and teaching is offered in the form of freestanding courses, mainly at second-cycle level but also at first-cycle level. The subject area also offers study programmes at third-cycle level. This subject area is also included in the Master’s programme in Language and Intercultural Communication. Research in linguistics is conducted within this subject area as part of the Department’s transdisciplinary research areas.


The position entails teaching and supervision at first- and second-cycle levels. Research can be included. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching Swahili and other courses offered in African languages (with key focus on Bantu languages). Courses are given as day or evening courses, and also online. Transdisciplinary courses and courses within the Department’s study programmes may also be required as well as tasks of an administrative nature, for example course coordination or departmental posts, hence the candidate must be able to express himself or herself well in oral and written Swedish and English. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the activities of the Department as a whole. The holder of this position is expected to be physically present at the Department and participate regularly in its work.


Eligibility for appointment as a lecturer is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 and in the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.

Applicant Assessment Criteria:

Assessment criteria for appointment as a lecturer are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 and in the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. In order to be considered for the position, the applicant must hold a doctoral degree in African languages or in another closely related subject area that the employer deems relevant. In assessing the applicant’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to the assessment of teaching skills as to research skills and other eligibility criteria. In the selection process, documented qualifications in the following areas will be taken into account in particular:

- Scholarly qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to their degree of originality and support within the international scholarly community;
- Teaching qualifications, demonstrated by documented experience in planning and giving courses and study programmes, including supervision and examinations. It would be to your advantage to include course evaluations from these;
- Ability to teach in both Swedish and English;
- Experience of teaching Swahili;
- Management experience and administrative skills (e.g. administration of teaching, course responsibility and coordination of courses or other posts at department or faculty level);
- Qualifications related to collaborations with the local community;
- Qualifications in teaching and learning in higher education.
