Description:

For a 3-year research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) on Cross-linguistic influence in phonology: the case of heritage Icelandic we are looking for 2 PhD students (for project description, https://www.ling.uni-konstanz.de/phonlab/research/projects/). We study selected phonological phenomena (preaspiration, word stress) in several groups of heritage language speakers and L2 speakers of Icelandic to throw light on the questions whether phenomena at different phonological levels are affected in the same way by dynamic cross-linguistic influences and whether these effects are the same for different types of learners.

The University of Konstanz is one of the eleven Excellence Universities in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy. The position will be affiliated with the Linguistics department: https://www.ling.uni-konstanz.de.

Your Responsibilities:
- Conducting a PhD research project on Heritage Icelandic
- Writing research publications independently and in collaboration with the principal investigators
- Practical research in the phonetics and phonology of Standard Icelandic, Heritage Icelandic and English
- Support of the principal investigators in organizational matters

Your Competencies:
- An excellent MA or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., Linguistics, Phonetics/Phonology, Speech and Language Technology, Speech Signal Processing, Speech Sciences, Psycholinguistics etc.)
- Strong written and oral English language skills
- Programming skills in MATLAB/R/ Python, experience in experimental designs and statistical methods
Experience in the (cross-linguistic) study of spoken language
- Motivation and ability for independent and structured working and problem-solving
- Interpersonal and communication skills and motivation to constructively engage in teamwork
