Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition

Description:

As part of the ANR CLASS, the thesis project is in the field of L2 acquisition with a situated approach to language cognition. It consists of studying longitudinally the development of the expression of temporality in French L2 by adult speakers of Syrian Arabic currently living in France. Previous work on conceptualizing events and building narratives in L2 agree that previously acquired languages influence the way learners understand and relate events (Carroll & Lambert, 2006; von Stutterheim et al., 2012). These studies are mainly interested in the role of grammaticalized and lexicalized categories in L1 in the conceptualization and verbalization of events in L2. There is little work, however, on the role of socio-cultural factors in the perception, selection and encoding of temporal information, be it the social conventions specific to a social group or to a linguistic community (Klein & von Stutterheim, 2002), or culturally anchored experiential processes (I-Wen Su, 2002, 2021).

The doctoral student will work in an interdisciplinary team. He / she will be required to perform the various tasks of collecting, processing and analyzing language and behavioral data, in particular oculometric data. In addition, he / she will collaborate with the CLASS project team (Lecturers and senior lecturers, postdoctoral fellow, study engineer expert in oculometry and student trainees).
