Job Title: Postdoctoral Position in Phonetics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Psycholinguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in phonetics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. We seek a computationally focused phonetician who has experience with speech articulation and preferably with electromagnetic articulometry (EMA), and background in statistical modeling or machine learning. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal. A Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related discipline is required.

The department has dual Carstens EMA systems for studying conversational interaction and speech production in general. In Professor Krivokapić’s lab, the primary responsibility of the successful applicant will be to assist with all aspects of conducting EMA experiments (participant recruitment, preparing and running experiments, post-processing, analysis, and write-up), and managing the EMA lab. Starting in May 2021, this will be a joint position in Professors Krivokapić’s and Beddor’s labs. In Beddor’s lab, the primary responsibility will be to construct computational models of sound change, building software-based simulations of production and perception, as well as more conventional statistical models of change. Related work may also involve conducting eye-tracking experiments using the department’s EyeLink 1000 Plus (SR Research) systems.

The researcher may also oversee graduate and undergraduate students working on projects related to the labs. The successful applicant will also be encouraged to work on their own research projects and to interact with the university's wider research environment. This includes a large phonetics community (with work conducted in both production and perception), and students and faculty in Linguistics, Psychology, and the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science. In addition to EMA and eye tracking, laboratory facilities in the Department of Linguistics include ultrasound, oral/nasal airflow, EGG, and EEG.

Candidates should be familiar and comfortable with data acquisition and analysis of multidimensional (e.g., spatial or time series) data, and should be comfortable working with (or learning) MATLAB for EMA data acquisition. They should also have strong familiarity and competence with at least one programming language, and experience with conventional statistical modeling or machine learning in R or Python. Although ideal candidates will have some experience with software simulations and modeling communities, candidates with a strong programming background and eagerness to expand their knowledge and work in this sphere are also encouraged to apply.

A cover letter explaining qualifications for the position, a CV, a research statement (up to two pages), and one or more (up to three) representative publications, manuscripts, or dissertation chapters should be sent to the application email address below. Please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to that address. The (flexible) starting date of the postdoctoral position is November 1, 2021.

Application deadline: July 25th 2021, or until position is filled.
