Description:
Like other syntactic theories, Simpler Syntax is an attempt to describe and
explain a language user's ability to establish a correspondence between
meaning and sound/gesture. What defines Simpler Syntax is the claim that this
correspondence should be as minimal as possible: i.e. that syntax should only
be invoked when other factors are insufficient to explain the phenomena. This
course is an introduction to Simpler Syntax, focusing both on its general
foundations within the Parallel Architecture as well as in applications to
particular empirical domains, such as morphology, binding theory, island
constraints, language variation and universals.
