Meeting Description:

The conference brings together researchers, translators and teachers of English, interested in interdisciplinary studies. During the past 2 years, work online has encouraged researchers from different areas and scientific focus to collaborate and do joint research in seemingly incompatible areas. Beyond the links between the traditionally related disciplines, an increasing number of researchers engage in the relations between traditionally disparate disciplines, such as humanities and computer sciences, art and mathematics, environmental studies and business. Such interdisciplinary approaches have enabled wider perspectives in the exploration of various issues that have significant implications in the everyday life. Thus, in practice, today neurologists are working together with linguists to gain better understanding of the working of the human brain; doctors, psychologists and astrophysicists are working together to explore the effects of life in space on humans; economy textbooks take a narrative approach traditionally related to literature in the explanation of economy issues.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

We are pleased to announce the 3rd International Conference English Studies at the Interface of Disciplines: Research and Practice (ESIDRP) organized by the Department of English Language and Literature in Skopje.
Some examples of such interdisciplinary works are Amitav Ghosh’s The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable, which explores history, politics, climate change, literature and socio-economic relations, with the effect of offering expanded understanding of each of these fields, how they affect each other, and shows potential ways of undertaking action to improve them. Elizabeth Outka’s The Influenza Pandemic and Interwar Literature examines literary works through the perspective of the influence of the interwar pandemic, which opens the possibility of new interpretations of many modernist works.
Therefore, this conference aims to foreground the value of exploring issues in the discipline of English Studies from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. If this prompts you to collaborate with colleagues from related (or not!) disciplines, we would be very interested to hear about the outcomes of such networking.
The organizing committee welcomes proposals on various aspects of interdisciplinary research:
- Any aspect of General and Applied Linguistics in combination with other sciences
- Alternative approaches to language teaching/learning including assessment, writing, teacher education, intercultural communication and education, and many more in combination with other disciplines/fields of study
- Translation and interpreting as interdisciplinary endeavours, looking at areas such as literary translation, translation as cultural mediation, translation as re-narration, the question of ethics in translation, translation in the context of language learning and teaching, training of translators and interpreters, application of new translation and interpreting technology tools, etc.
- Exploring the connections between literature and other disciplines, such as history, sociology, economics, etc., literature as a hybrid medium, comparative literary studies, literature and new media, literature as historiography, literature and teaching languages, etc.

Proposals presenting original, previously unpublished research are invited in these formats:
- oral presentation (total 15 min + 5 min discussion, individual or in pairs)
- panel discussions (a panel discussion will be allotted 1 hour and 20 minutes, and the time for presentations within the panel can range from 10-15 minutes, depending on the number of participants
